Mini buses

Mini buses

In the mini-buses which are permitted to take only 50+2 passengers, hundreds of commuters travel every day. Despite various dailies highlighting the issue and sending photocopies of the news items to the authorities concerned, there is no remedial action to the problem.

Will the new District Collector Karur look into this and do the needful, before any untoward incident happens in the industrial estate bus route?

R.S. Moorthy,

Karur.

Trains to Thanjavur

With reference to the news item `more trains sought for Chennai from Thanjavur' ( The Hindu July 9), I feel that the Central Ministers, Mani Shankar Aiyar and S. S. Palanimanickam, who were elected from Mayiladuthurai and Thanjavur Parliamentary Constituencies respectively, should speak to the Railway Minister, Lalu Yadav to operate an exclusive train from Kumbakonam to Chennai, which was assured in the 2005 Railway budget.

V. Murugesan,

Thanjavur.

II

Referring to the news item `more trains sought for Chennai', it is very unfortunate that the Railway Minister did not fulfil his own announcement made in the Railway Budget 2005 on introducing a new overnight train between Kumbakonam and Chennai. The people of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam should jointly take steps to draw the attention of the elected representatives on the urgent need for introducing trains to Chennai and Kanyakumari from Kumbakonam or Mayiladuthurai.

C. Saravana Kumar,

Thanjavur.

Landline

phones

It is much distressing to note the remark made by the Vice-Chancellor of the Bharathidasan University at the function to distribute awards to the outstanding BSNL staff at Tiruchi recently, that landline phones are being surrendered on account of the careless attitude of the grassroot level workers especially linemen. It is a serious accusation that too in the presence of two general managers of Telecom districts. I suggest to BSNL authorities to replace all the landline telephones by providing mobile sets.

K. Santhanam,

Kumbakonam.

Traffic rules

The thoughtful capture of a `van canopied with a huge load of haystack' ( The Hindu July 2) is an eye-opener for traffic law enforcing authorities. It speaks volumes. This phenomenon alone is an unsolved chronic traffic violence of greater magnitude allowed with smiling faces at every traffic signal and check post. While the traffic law for two wheelers is being enforced very strictly, the life killing violation of the above said kind turns a Nelsons eye. There were many fatal accidents reported due to this kind of lethally loaded vehicles. Free flow of traffic is affected due to the easy movements of these kind of unchecked four wheelers. Why not Tiruchi set an example by banning the movement of such vehicles and also the cattle loaded trucks.

Additional buses

There is dearth of bus service between Main Guard Gate and Kallanai via Tiuvalarcholai. School and college students find it very difficult to travel in crowded buses. I request the transport authorities to run additional buses in this route.

Share autos

Following the recent surprise check conducted by the Transport Department on auto-rickshaws for over loading school students, the transport officials should also take stringent action against the share autos, which carry more than the permissible number of passengers. Besides, the drivers seldom wear the uniform and its conductors stand or sit on the footboard while the vehicles in motion causing danger to two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. Though the traffic police notice this, seldom they take action.

C. Ramalingam,

Tiruchi.

Headlights

As of now, all the vehicles are using high tech beam headlights which are highly dazzling and resulting in frequent accidents. I request the police to take stringent action against erring vehicle owners.

A. Ansar,

Tiruchi.

Karur.
