Power shutdown

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended in some parts of Thoraipakkam and Thousand Lights between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesday for maintenance work.

Workers protest

Chennai Corporation workers affiliated to the Madras Corporation Red Flag Union will go on protest on July 20 against privatisation of the civic agency's services.

At its recently concluded conference in the city, the Union members drew up a list of demands, including rollback of privatisation of garbage clearance and maintenance of vehicles, and said they would hold protests to press for the demands. Other demands include provision of safety equipment for sanitary workers, permanent jobs for 2,512 workers still on temporary payrolls, housing facilities for workers and providing state-of-the-art medical services.

Children's book fair

Bookpoint India Private Limited is organising a weeklong "Children's Book Exhibition" from July 18 at its bookstore on 160, Anna Salai. Books of interest for school children, including general knowledge, quiz and atlases will be available. The books will have a discount on cover price from 10 to 15 per cent.

Blood donation

Indian Red Cross recently organised a blood donation camp at IIPM Tower in Egmore on Friday. The camp was organised by Dean and Administration of Indian Institute of Personnel Management Prof. Amlan Ray.

Mechanic's training

for women

Gurukulam Community College and the Inner Wheel Club of Madras East recently concluded a mechanic's training workshop for women. Eleven women from economically backward sections were selected for the workshopand trained at the TVS facility in Hosur.

Free Yoga course

Swami Satyavratananda Saraswathi will organise a free yoga course for beginners on asana, pranayama and meditation from July 12 between 6 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. on every Wednesday and Thursday at Kesari High School, Thyagaraya Road, Pondy Bazaar for one month. For further details, contact 2432 8087.

Elocution contest

St. John's Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Baba Nagar, Villivakkam, will conduct a city-level elocution contest in Tamil on July 18 as part of the birth anniversary celebrations of the school founder the late Rt. Rev. G. Rajakumar. The contests will be held in two rounds.

The preliminary round will be held in four zones in Chennai and the top two teams from each zone go into

the final round.

Each school can send two participants.
