Dalmiya's opponents seek independent observer

KOLKATA: The faction opposing Jagmohan Dalmiya's bid to get re-elected as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, moved court seeking an independent observer to conduct the elections of the state body.

This move was made by Aryan Club, an official affiliate of CAB, which has also sought an inquest into the accounts of the CAB claiming anomalies in it. The assistant secretary of the club, Samar Pal, who is one of the prominent members challenging Dalmiya under the leadership of the city Police chief Prasun Mukharjee, said the move was necessitated by apprehensions that the ruling faction may adopt unfair means while conducting elections.

Mr. Pal filed the suit before P.K. Sarkar, chief judge of the City Civil Court on Monday. "As Mr. Dalmiya is himself a candidate, we have prayed for appointment of an observer for conducting the elections in a free and fair manner,'' he said.

The inquiry into the CAB accounts has been added as an annexure, "as we felt that an investigation into the CAB accounts is necessary after the BCCI froze all the payments and grants meant for it.'' The petition has been accepted and case will come up for hearing on Friday, informed Mr. Pal. — Principal Correspondent
