NGOs also answerable to the public

Usually it is the non-governmental organisations, which champion the cause of the public, that raise questions for the Government to answer. At a session on the Right to Information Act, while answering questions Padma Balasubramanian, Information Commissioner, Central Information Commission, said NGOs (substantially financed, directly or indirectly by funds provided by the appropriate Government) were also covered by the Act. They too should designate information officers to provide information to persons requesting the information under the legislation.
