Lions Club `playing important role in supporting education'

CHENNAI: Educating the poor is imperative if progress is to be assured. This was underlined by the speakers at the launch of educational services by Lions Clubs International, District 324A-6 at Kovilambakkam near Tambaram on Sunday. "Education of the poor is at the top of our agenda. This is our first project for the year and many more are in the offing," said Mr. P. Elangovan, regional chairperson, Region-IV.

S. Nagin vice-district governor said education alone would help in attaining one's goals in life. The Club played an important role in supporting children with such projects, he said.

Lions District Governor, P. Ramesh Babu, distributed scholarships worth Rs. 2.06 lakh to 101 school and college students. More than 60 students were given uniforms, 60 students received notebooks and about 100 elderly people got spectacles. Free dhotis and sarees were also distributed to the needy at a cost of Rs. 15,000. School toppers chosen from different schools from Chennai and Kancheepuram district were also honoured.
