HYDERABAD: Considerable research was required to achieve a breakthrough in cutting the costs and improving the reliability of renewable energy as an alternative source, said Gayathri Ramachandran, Director-General, Environment Protection Training and Research Institute (EPTRI), here on Friday. Delivering a lecture on "Environment and sustainable development-role of science and technology", organised by the Hyderabad chapter of Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) here, she said EPTRI was attempting a novel rural electrification strategy by using light emitting diodes (LED) technology for home and street-lighting in villages and hamlets not connected to the grid.
