Vidya volunteers to be appointed

HYDERABAD: Government will initiate steps to appoint vidya volunteers shortly in view of 70,000 teacher's posts lying vacant, as any further delay would affect academic activity. Director of School Education S. Balasubramanyam gave an assurance in this regard to a delegation of Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation.

Ch. Subash Chandra Bose, president and N. Narayana, general secretary, in a statement here on Sunday said the department had received information on vacant posts of vidya volunteers from eight districts as also mandal resource persons. Orders would be issued after information was secured from other districts. - Special Correspondents

Allowances sought for polling staff

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation has sought payment of allowances and extension of minimum facilities for three days to the staff involved in the second and third phases of gram panchayat elections on August 2 and 6.

K. Venugopal, president, and N. V. Raghavaiah, general secretary, in a statement issued here on Sunday appealed to the State Election Commission (SEC) to instruct the mandal development officers on the payment of allowances and extension of facilities like drinking water and food. - Special Correspondent

JVV to strengthen anti-liquor stir

HYDERABAD: Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV) will strengthen the anti-liquor agitation by involving women and social organisations, V. Lakshmana Reddy, president said here on Sunday.

He was presiding over a function organised to mark the release of a book, `Nenu Saitam' by Jnanpeeth awardee C. Narayana Reddy. JVV would strive to ensure that there was no shortage of blood to the needy.

Dr. Reddy lauded JVV for its social and scientific activities aimed at educating people.

C. Veeraiah, former chief engineer, C. Ramachandraiah, social scientist and U. Mallikarjuna Sarma, secretary, Ravindra Bharati also spoke. - Special Correspondent

Newly-elected sarpanch stabbed

VISAKHAPATNAM: A newly-elected sarpanch was stabbed by his rivals in Anantagiri mandal in the district on Saturday night.

J. Demudu suffered knife injuries when his political rivals attacked him immediately after he was declared elected sarpanch of Peddakota village in the agency area late in the evening. Following deterioration in his condition, he was rushed to Visakhapatnam. Doctors at the King George Hospital said that following administration of blood and intravenous fluids, his condition improved. Doctors said his condition was stable. - Staff Reporter

Jail warder commits suicide

KURNOOL: Head warder at Banaganapalli sub jail Subbaiah committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Sunday. According to reports, Subbaiah was depressed after an undertrial escaped from his custody on Saturday. Subbaiah was escorting Phakira, a murder case accused, to hospital in the town when he ran away. Viewing the incident as a serious lapse, Subbaiah consumed pesticide. He died in the hospital here on Sunday. - Staff Reporter

Two end lives over financial problems

Sangareddy: Munagala Beerappa (40), a farmer from Chimnapur hamlet of Kandi, committed suicide in his sugarcane farm on Sunday.

According to the Sangareddy rural police, Beerappa, who was a guarantor for a loan his friend had taken, decided to do away with his life, as the debtor was not repaying Rs. 30,000 taken as loan.

In another incident a farm labourer Munagala Yadayya (35) of Uttarapalli in Sangareddy mandal committed suicide also due to financial problems. - Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: The Sri Venkateswara University has launched a post-graduate course in bioinformatics. An emerging area having the features of both life sciences and information technology, the course has a lot of demand in the biotechnology industry, said Vice-Chancellor S. Civil works grounded

TIRUPATI: SVU Vice-Chancellor S. Jayarama Reddy grounded civil works costing Rs.1 crore on the campus. Four buildings have been planned under TEQIP funds of Rs.70 lakhs. A guesthouse was renovated at a cost of Rs.10 lakhs and check dams constructed on the campus. - Staff Reporter

Four injured

ANANTAPUR: Four persons were injured in a clash at Mudigubba in Anantapur district on Saturday night. According to reports, after the polling and counting process was completed, two groups clashed and hurled bombs at each other. The police rushed additional troops. - Staff Reporter

KADAPA: A former MPTC member of Gopavaram in Proddatur mandal Subba Rao and his followers quit the TDP and joined the Congress in presence of Proddatur mandal president N. Raghava Reddy on Sunday. He said he joined the Congress as he was impressed by its developmental activities. - Staff Reporter

KADAPA: Deputy Director of Social Welfare R. Venugopala Rao on Sunday expressed satisfaction at his three-year tenure in Kadapa district. Replying to felicitations during the farewell function, Mr. Rao, who has been posted as personal secretary to Minister for Social Welfare, said he strived to ensure that Kadapa district topped in the State in SSC results. - Staff Reporter

Re-poll today in KE Chinnaipalem

Kakinada: Collector and district election authority M. Subrahmanyam has said that re-polling will be held for the post of sarpanch of KE Chinnaipalem panchayat in Kotananduru mandal on July 31.

The panchayat witnessed violence during counting of votes on July 29. However, the results declared for ward member posts will remain unaltered. - Correspondent

TDP bags T.K. Puram panchayat

Srikakulam: The T.K. Puram gram panchayat in L.N. Peta mandal for which re-election was conducted on Sunday was bagged by TDP candidate L. Parvatrhi.

She won with a majority of 80 votes.

D. Surya Raju is the vice-president. Re-election was necessitated here as some miscreants poured ink and sand into the ballot box on Saturday. - Special Correspondent
