Naxals set cable on fire

KURNOOL: Four armed extremists of CPI (ML) Janashakthi raided the material yard of a private mobile phone company and set ablaze cable at Kotakanduru near Allagadda in Kurnool district in the early hours of Wednesday. The extremists left a note issued in the name of Ramu, Nallamala Division Secretary of the party, which stated that they were doing it in protest against the death of Maoist party secretary Madhav. - Staff Reporter

Extension for Sitapati

HYDERABAD: The term of P. Sitapati Rao, adviser to Government, Irrigation, has been extended by two years. This follows the extension of his tenure as additional Director-General of the National Academy of Construction, a Government organisation, by two years. As advisor, Dr. Rao deals with the irrigation projects of coastal Andhra such as Polavaram. - Special Correspondent

Legislative Council: teachers' contention

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh State Teachers' Union has opposed the move to decide the constituencies for the proposed Legislative Council on the basis of population. Union leaders in a statement on Wednesday said it would not be possible to take a decision on constituencies without ascertaining the number of voters. It would be wise to release the voter lists before finalising them. - Special Correspondent

G.O. on medical reimbursement issued

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh State Teachers' Union said on Wednesday that a G.O. clarifying reimbursement of medical charges incurred by either retired or serving teachers had been issued. A recent G.O. said amounts ranging from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 1.7 lakh would be reimbursed to teachers who get treated in referral hospitals. Union leaders criticised denial of reimbursement to teachers who got treated in hospitals outside the State. - Special Correspondent

Space Department to rectify error

HYDERABAD: The Department of Space has admitted that the omission of mention of Nellore district and Andhra Pradesh in the communications and letterheads of Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, in the district has been `inadvertent' and promised to rectify it. Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Official Language Commission A.B.K. Prasad had drawn the attention of G. Madhavan Nair, Secretary of the Space Department, to the omission. - Special Correspondent

VHP refutes CPI's conspiracy charge

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh West region of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has refuted CPI State council secretary K. Narayana's charge that it was behind the `conspiracy' in the reported evangelism in Tirumala. VHP leaders claimed that Mr. Narayana's charge amounted to supporting the organisations involved in propagating Christianity on the hill. - Special Correspondent

Elected to State Medical Council

HYDERABAD: Seven doctors from across the State have been elected members of the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council. The elections were held recently after a gap of 10 years. The names of those elected members under the general constituency of Registered Medical Practitioners in the Indian Medical Association panel are: G. Balamaddiah, Balbeer Singh Yadav, V. Ramprasad, K. Ramesh Reddy, E. Ravinder Reddy, P. Vijaychander Reddy and N. Kishore. - Staff Reporter

Salaries hiked

HYDERABAD: The Government has issued orders (G.O.139) increasing salaries of temporary part-time and contingency employees from Rs. 780 to Rs. 1,071 and from Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 1,716 respectively. - Special Correspondent

RTC driver robbed of cash

Madanapalle : An RTC driver was robbed of Rs. 1.8 lakhs near Vijaya Bank in Madanapalle on Wednesday. The victim, Mastanvali, was approached by a stranger after he drew the cash from the bank. The stranger diverted his attention saying that some cash had fallen on the ground. When Mastanvali began searching for the lost money, the miscreant took the cash bag and disappeared. The II Town police station registered the case.— Correspondent

Petrol bunk looted

Madanapalle : Five youngsters, armed with lethal weapons, looted Vijayalakshmi petrol bunk near Gangammagudi in Madanapalle--Punganur road recently and decamped with Rs. 50,000. They allegedly beat up bunk manager Sivakumar and watchman Lakshminarayan. B.V. Sreenivasalu, SI, rural police station, registered the case. - Correspondent

Action demanded against hospital staff

Sangareddy: Sangareddy legislator T. Jayaprakash Reddy and Asif Nagar MLA Muazzam Khan demanded action against the staff of the district hospital whose alleged negligence resulted in the death of 20-year-old Imran on Tuesday. Imran was injured in an accident on Monday. The two legislators who visited the hospital on Wednesday and consoled the parents of the deceased. They demanded criminal action against the doctors and suspension of those responsible. - Correspondent

Counselling for ANM applicants

VIZIANAGARAM: Counselling for vacant ANM seats in five training centres in the district will be held at the Collectorate on August 4, according to District Medical and Health Officer V. Venkateswara Rao.

Prior to the counselling, certificates of the candidates will be verified in his office from 9 a.m. on that day, he said. -Correspondent

Cleaner killed as van overturns

VIZIANAGARAM: Cleaner of a private mini van, Vaikuntham, 30, of Veeraghattam in Srikakulam district was killed on the spot when the vehicle overturned and fell into a road-side ditch near Paridi on Wednesday.

Members of a marriage party travelling in the vehicle, however, escaped with minor injuries.

The accident occurred when the driver of the van lost control while trying to overtake a truck, according to the police. -Correspondent

Chikungunya `deaths'

VIZIANAGARAM : Two persons died of Chikungunya in the last 18 hours.

According to information, K. Appala Swami, 45, and Kottapu Lakshmi, 19, of Bakkupeta village in Seethanagaram mandal were admitted to a private nursing home in Parvathipuram with symptoms of Chikungunya.

A medical team led by Mallikharjuna Rao visited the village and extended medical aid to 20 people suffering from fever. -Correspondent

NRI student donates prize money

KHAMMAM Poojitha Kondabolu, a student from Dix Hill, New York, who was crowned `D2R creations - Miss Andhra Worldwide' in the USA recently, has gifted her prize money for the education of poor children in Khammam.

She handed over Rs. 2 lakhs to the Collector, Sashibushan Kumar on Tuesday.

She requested him to spend Rs. 10,000 each on the education of 10 rural students and Rs. 1 lakh for purchase of computers in rural schools.
