BANGALORE: H.S. Mukunda of the Indian Institute of Science and M.R.S. Rao, president, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, are among the 22 scientists and engineers selected by the Government for its annual science awards. The two will receive the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Award for 2004. Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda, who announced the awards here on Thursday, said the Government was encouraging young and talented scientists and engineers by honouring them with awards named after M. Visvesvaraya, C.V. Raman, Satish Dhawan and Kalpana Chawla. It had constituted a committee headed by Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister C.N.R. Rao to select scientists and engineers for the awards, the Minister said. In all, 158 applications were received for the awards for two years. However, the Government had not found anyone eligible for the Raja Ramanna Award, Mr. Gowda said. The Government had also recognised the contribution of 1,000 science teachers in rural schools, he said. The Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) will organise a function to present the awards on August 17 at the Banquet Hall of the Vidhana Soudha. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and the KSCST president will present the awards.
M. Visvesvaraya Award
H.S. Mukunda, professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and M.R.S. Rao, president, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, will get the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Award for 2004. The award for 2005 will not be given as no eligible scientist applied. The award is given to scientists for lifetime achievement and contribution to the development of science and technology. The award co- mes with a purse of Rs. 50,000, a memento and a citation.
C.V. Raman Award
The Sir C.V. Raman Award-winners for 2004 are: Sanjeev Ramachandra Inamdar, programme coordinator, Laser Spectroscopy, Department of Physics, Karnatak University, Dharwad; K.S. Rangappa, professor and chairman, Department of Studies in Chemistry, University of Mysore, Mysore; P. Vishnu Kamath, professor in Chemistry, Central College, Bangalore University, Bangalore; P. Sugaundhi Rao, professor and head, Department of Microbiology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal; K.H. Srinivasa, assistant professor, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, Bangalore; H.P. Puttaraju, professor of Sericulture, Bangalore University. The award-winners for 2005 are: Channabasaveshwar V. Yelamaggad, Centre for Liquid Crystal Research, Jalahalli, Bangalore; A. Govindaraj, senior scientific officer, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Jakkur, Bangalore; Usha Kini, professor of Pathology, St. John's Medical College, Bangalore; R. Medhamurthy, Molecular Reproduction Development and Genetics, IISc., Bangalore; Fakruddin Bashasab, assistant professor, Institute of Agri-biotechnology, Krishinagar, Dharwad and V.B. Nargund, professor, Plant Pathology, Department of Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture, Bheemarayanagudi, Gulbarga. The award is given to scientists for their achievements in physical science and mathematics, chemical science, life science, medical science, agricultural science and animal husbandry. It comes with a purse of Rs. 25,000, a memento and a citation.
Satish Dhawan Award
The Prof. Satish Dhawan Award-winners for 2004 are: S. Dasappa, principal research scientist, Centre for Sustainable Technologies, IISc., Bangalore; B.V. Venkatarama Reddy, associate professor, Department of Civil Engineering, IISc., Bangalore; G.S. Gopalakrishna, reader, Department of Studies in Geology, University of Mysore, Mysore. The award-winners for 2005 are: Ashok M. Raichur, associate professor, Department of Metallurgy, IISc., Bangalore; B.S. Rajanikanth, associate professor and chairman, High Voltage Engineering Department, IISc., Bangalore; Navakanta Bhat, associate professor, Electro- Communication Engineering Department, IISc., Bangalore. The award is given to young engineers for achievements in aerospace science and technology, computer and electronic engineering, earth science and engineering science. It comes with a purse of Rs. 25,000, a memento and a citation.
Kalpana Chawla Award
Mythily Ramaswamy, associate professor, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mathematics Centre, IISc., Bangalore, and Noor Shahina Begum, reader, Department of Chemistry, Central College, Bangalore University, Bangalore, have been selected for the Dr. Kalpana Chawla Award for 2004 and 2005 respectively. The award is given to a young woman scientist for achievements in the field of science and technology. It comes with a purse of Rs. 25,000, a memento and a citation.
