Corrections and Clarifications

  • In the promo on page 1, "Cooperative polls soon" (Tamil Nadu, August 3, 2006), a wrong picture was used, of E.V. Velu, Tamil Nadu Food Minister, instead of Ko. Si. Mani, Cooperation Minister.

  • In "India-Pakistan trade stuck on SAFTA" (Op-Ed, July 31, 2006), it was stated that the South Asia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) went operational on July 1. A reader felt it should have been January 1. Nirupama Subramanian clarifies: "SAFTA was to have come into effect on January 1, 2006. But that was put off as Sri Lanka and Pakistan had not ratified it by that date. Sri Lanka ratified it in mid-January and Pakistan in February. It came into operation on July 1, 2006."

  • The photograph accompanying the feature "Roman holiday" ("Postcard from Rome", The Hindu-Magazine, July 30, 2006, page 7) was incorrectly described as depicting the Colosseum. As a reader has pointed out, the picture is a part of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican city depicting the statues of various saints and the sturdy colonnade supporting this ancient structure.
