ICAR award for veterinary dean

TIRUPATI: Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) has chosen Md. Hafeez, Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Sri Venkateswara Veterinary Sciences, Tirupati, for the prestigious Bharat Ratna Dr.C.Subramaniam Award for `outstanding teachers' for the year 2004-05 in recognition of services rendered in the field of teaching, research and extension for over three decades. He will receive the award from Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar, at a meeting in New Delhi on August 18.-Staff Reporter

Ex-servicemen for coast police stations

HYDERABAD: The State Government is considering deployment of ex-servicemen to man police stations proposed to be set up along the coastline to check criminal activities on and off shore.

The issue had come up at a meeting convened by Home Minister K. Jana Reddy, with top police officials on Thursday to discuss the security scenario in the State. The meeting decided that a G.O. be issued fixing the jurisdiction of marine police stations. - Special Correspondent

Rs. 1.01-cr. worth jewels donated

TIRUMALA: An ardent devotee of Lord Venkateswara, who wished to remain unidentified, donated diamond studded `Karna patralu' (ear robes) to the presiding deity. The devotee who is believed to be native of Chennai handed over the offering to TTD Executive Officer A.P. V. Narayana Sarma. The cost of the jewels is put at around Rs. 1.01 crores. - Staff Reporter

Bezwada Gopala Reddy remembered

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday paid glowing tributes in memory of Bezawada Gopala Reddy, former Chief Minister of erstwhile Andhra State, on the eve of his 99th birth anniversary. State cautioned on flood situation

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Workers' Association has cautioned the Government against adopting a `casual' approach in tackling the flood situation. In a statement here on Friday, B.Venkat, general secretary, referred to the suffering of people in 238 villages of coastal Andhra following floods in Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers. - Staff Reporter

Woman electrocuted

ADILABAD: Bhalerao Sugandha, 30, of Rajivnagar in Gudihatnoor was electrocuted on Friday afternoon while trying to save her daughter Anjali. According to reports, Anjali came into contact with a broken service wire seeing which Sugandha tried to free her. In the process, the daughter escaped while the mother got electrocuted.-Staff Reporter

AISF rally

KURNOOL: AISF members took out a rally at Dhone in Kurnool district on Friday to create awareness among students and people about the problems in social welfare hostels. AISF district secretary Lenin said many hostels did not have own buildings. TIRUPATI: The first issue of `Srinivasam', a Telugu fortnightly published from Tirupati was released here on Friday. Pavithrotsavam from today

Tirumala: Ankurarpanam, the prelude event was today conducted inside the famous hill temple of Lord Venkateswara, in connection with the three-day annual Pavithrotsavam scheduled to begin from tomorrow. As part of the festival, Pavithra Prathista shall be observed on Sunday followed by Pavithra Samarpana and Poornahuti on the following days. Crest gates opened

KURNOOL: Srisailam reservoir continued to discharge 4.24 lakh cusecs of floodwater through the seven crest gates - as the inflow into the reservoir rose to 5.13 lakh cusecs.

Meanwhile, the authorities increased the supply to the KC canal at Sunkesula to 2,012 cusecs, while 25,866 was let into the river. Tungabhadra contributed 29,500 cusecs of floodwater to the Krishna.

Arrangements for final phase of polls

Kakinada : Arrangements are ready for holding elections to the villages in Amalapuram division during the third and final phase on August 6, according to M. Subrahmanyam Collector and the district election authority. Of 267 village panchayats, 29 panchayats have unanimous elections. Adequate bandobust were made to ensure free and fair polling. — Correspondent

MPLADS works to be speeded up

Kakinada : East Godavari Collector M Subrahmanyam has asked engineers of various departments to expedite works under the MPLADS and MLAs constituency development funds. Reviewing these works on Friday, he asked engineers to submit utilisation certificates without delay. Regarding works yet to be started, he wanted them to expedite them after the election's model code of conduct expires on August 7. — Correspondent

Motorcylist killed

JEYPORE : A motorcyclist was killed and two others injured when a motorcycle collided with a jeep on the national highway at Taliguda village near Jeypore on Monday. The motorcycle rider B. Srinivas Rao died on the spot while the injured, S. Murali and K. Srinu have been admitted to the Jeypore sub-divisional hospital.

Free health camp

JEYPORE : As many as 110 patients were examined at a free health camp organised by the Rotary Club at a Deoghati adopted tribal village recently. Former Rotary president T.P.K. Swamy and his team examined the patients and distributed free medicines. Dr. Swamy said most of the villagers had been suffering from viral fever, scabies, malaria, arthritis, diarrhoea and malnutritional anaemia.

Two die of diarrhoea

JEYPORE : Two persons Sunamani Khilo and Ananda Khilo died due to diarrhoea while five other affected persons, Chandrama Khilo, Gourimani Khilo, Kamala Khilo, Hasamani Khilo and Kulan Harijan have been admitted to the Boipariguda community health centre

IFTU opposes Government move

Kakinada: The district unit of the Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) at its executive meeting on Friday with K Joji president in the chair, opposed the Government's move to wind up four circles, eight divisions and 16 sub divisions of the Public Health and Municipal Engineering department. — Correspondent

Kalyanotsavam on August 9

ONGOLE : Arrangements have been made for performing Sri Venkateswara Swami Kalyanotsavam at the TTD Kalyanamandapams at Ongole and Chirala on August 9 that coincides with Sravana pournima with Sravana. The festivities are conducted every year under the auspices of TTD.
