Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: From Independence Day, the Department of Posts will treat Speed Post and express parcel post in the entire National Capital Region (NCR) as `local'. Communications and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran has approved the proposal to treat Delhi's satellite towns such as Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad as `local' for these two services, according to an official news release.

The tariff for local speed post up to 200 grams is Rs. 20 and the rate for local express parcels up to 3 kg. is Rs. 30. The proposal is aimed at ensuring that postal facilities at par with those in Delhi are made available to all these high growth areas within a definite time period, according to the news release.

With the opening of two new post offices in the Rohini area the number of delivery post offices in Dwarka will rise to three by next month. Gurgaon will have two news post offices in Sushant Lok and IMT Manesar while the third one will come up in Udyog Vihar by October this year. Post Offices have also been sanctioned in South City-I, DLF Phase-II and DLF Phase-III.

Faridabad will soon have a new post office at NHPC Colony, near Green Field area. Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad will have five new post offices each in Sector 45, Sector 82, Tronica City, Sector 62 and Knowledge Park. A fully equipped India Post Business Centre has started functioning in Noida's Sector 16 last month.
