PCB directive to implement pollution control measures

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Pollution Control Board (PCB) has decided on strict enforcement of pollution control measures in the construction of multi-storeyed buildings, on account of widespread complaints from members of the public.

An official release said here on Wednesday that installation and work permissions would have to be obtained from the Board for construction of buildings with four or more storeys. The Board would specify conditions on control of sound, vibrations, dust and wastewater from the construction site while issuing the clearances.

Besides, arrangements would have to be made for removal of waste materials on completion of the building and collection and treatment of wastewater. Pollution from generators and air-conditioning plants would have to be kept under check.

These restrictions would be applicable to all ongoing works on hotels, restaurants, commercial institutions, flats and hospitals.

Builders, who have not obtained the clearances from the Board, should apply for the same immediately and stop work until the clearances are obtained, the official release said.
