Three held, counterfeit currency seized
A team of police personnel, which was patrolling on the LIC road, checked the baggage of Selvaraj (44) of Kanyakumari district and found the counterfeit notes. He was arrested. The preliminary enquiry revealed that the spurious notes were brought from Chennai. The police also arrested Murugesan (27) of Thangayur in Sankagiri taluk and Veerasekaran (43) of Nagapattinam district who came to Salem to receive the notes from Selvaraj. The police suspected that a well-organised gang was behind this activity. Staff Reporter
Lawyers boycott courts
The protest was in response to the call by the Federation of District and Subordinate Courts Bar Associations of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Members of the Salem Bar Association said it was impossible to have 40 suits in the monthly list of every subordinate court and achieve 75 per cent tackling and disposal. They urged the High Court to withdraw the circular. They claimed over 3,000 lawyers in the district boycotted the courts. In Namakkal district, over 700 lawyers participated in the protest. CRPF constable injured
According to police, Shivbir Singh (24), hailing from Madhya Pradesh, was on duty at Kuniamuthur on the Coimbatore - Palakkad Road, when the bus proceeding from Coimbatore to Palakkad knocked him down. The injured constable was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Staff Reporter
Jayalalithaa's charge against Government
In a statement here, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she, as a responsible leader of the Opposition, would not remain a mute spectator to these violations. Dubbing the DMK Government a "minority" one, she said right from May 13 when it assumed office, it had been indulging in "violation of Assembly Rules and anti-people activities." Youth, mother killed in hit-and-run accident
The police said J. Jayaraj (27) of Madaththur near Paavoorchathiram had taken his mother, J. Maria Selvam (46), and his aunt, A. Gnanam (38) of Mariathaaipuram, also near Paavoorchathram, in a motorcycle. On his return to Madathur, at KTC Nagar, an unidentified vehicle hit the motorcycle and sped away. While Jayaraj died on the spot, Maria Selvam died on the way to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. The condition of Gnanam is said to be critical. The Paavoorchathram police have registered a case.
The police said M. Maria Lawrence (45), a mason from T. Kallikulam near Valliyoor, had constructed a house for the relative of his friend, V. Sekar alias Rajasekar (47), also a mason from Kizhavanaeri near Valliyoor. As the owner of the house had borrowed Rs. 4,000 from Lawrence, he repeatedly asked Sekar to get the arrears from his relative. When the issue surfaced on Wednesday night, Sekar stabbed Lawrence on his chest, killing him on the spot.
Vaiko's appeal to Central Government

Date extended
extended the last date for inclusion and deletion of names in the Below Poverty Line (BPL) list till August 31. In a statement issued here on Thursday, the Collector, M. Chandrasekaran, said the list would be kept on display till August 31. People who have any objections regarding the list can apply to the Block Development Officer (village panchayat) concerned. 2,550 litres of illicit arrack seized
Acting on instructions from the Superintendent of Police, H.M. Jayaram, a team conducted surprise raids in Maarandahalli and A.Mallapuram and seized 2,550 litres of illicit arrack.
