This Day That Age
The Chinese Government, in a statement issued in Peking on August 17, gave unqualified support to the nationalisation of the Suez Canal Company and said Egypt's action was "righteous, moral and legal." The statement declared "any threat of force or armed intervention to settle the Suez Canal question will inevitably meet with the resolute opposition of the peoples of Asia and Africa and of the whole world which will by no means be of any advantage to Britain and France." At the same time, the statement complimented Britain and France for "having taken some rather wise actions favourable to the relaxation of international tension" before the Suez crisis gathered. It hoped "Britain and France will deal with the Suez Canal question in the same spirit."
