Bus crushes retired police officer

NEW DELHI: In a tragic accident, a retired senior police officer, V.S. Sehgal, was killed when a Blueline bus hit his Maruti car at Chittaranjan Park here on Tuesday. Mr. Sehgal who retired from the Intelligence Bureau, was rushed to All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), but was declared dead on arrival. Mr. Sehgal was a resident of Kalkaji and an IPS officer of the 1955 batch. Police Commissioner K.K. Paul visited AIIMS to pay his respects to Mr. Sehgal.

DU student commits suicide

NEW DELHI: An M.A. final year student of Delhi University allegedly hanged herself to death at her Malviya Nagar residence in South Delhi on Tuesday. The police have recovered a suicide note in which she said that she herself was responsible for taking the extreme step.

According to the police, Kalyani Tamang from Assam was pursuing her Masters in history from the South campus. Her sister, who earlier lived with her, had moved to Jammu about three months ago after she got a job there. Inquest proceedings into the matter are on.

Man held for selling medicines illegally

NEW DELHI: A 42-year-old man was arrested at Kotwali in North Delhi on Monday for allegedly selling medicines meant for supply only to Government hospitals. The police claim to have recovered medicines worth Rs. 3 lakhs from his possession.

Acting on a tip-off that a person had been selling medicines meant for Government hospitals at cheaper rates, the Special Staff of the North Delhi police sent a decoy to strike a deal with him. As soon as the deal was finalised, the police mounted a raid and arrested him.

During interrogation, he identified himself as Rajan Kapoor. He allegedly procured the medicines and surgical items from one Jeet and supplied them to his customers from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan. After buying medicines, Rajan would remove the "Government Supply, Not for Sale" stamp by using some chemical.

He told the police that Jeet used to get the medicines from Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash Narayan Hospital in connivance with some hospital staff. A hunt has been launched for him and others involved.

Workshop on AIDS concludes

NEW DELHI: A three-day workshop on prevention of HIV/AIDS in Central police forces organised by the National Security Guard (NSG) concludes here on Wednesday.

Representatives from NSG, Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Central Industrial Security Force, Assam Rifles and Sashastra Sena Bal are attending the workshop. The workshop has been organised as part of the action plan prepared by the Union Home Ministry for prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in Central police forces.

Amity team wins moot court competition

NEW DELHI: A team from Amity Law College, New Delhi, was adjudged the best in the Ninth Raj Anand Intellectual Property Rights Moot Court Competition held here this past weekend.

The winning team, comprising Shashi Mathes, Shaunak Kashyap and Pratyush Miglani, spoke on a hypothetical problem relating to the Patent Law. In all, teams from 16 law colleges from various parts of the country participated in the two-day competition.
