CHENNAI: R.Poornalingam, a retired IAS officer, has been appointed Chairman of the Third Police Commission in Tamil Nadu. Announcing this in the Assembly while replying to demands for grants for the Police department on Wednesday, Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi said D.Sudarsanam, leader of the Congress Legislature Party, would be the Deputy Chairman. P.Kalimuthu, retired Director-General of Police, and G.Ramachandran, retired DIG of Prison, would be Members. Ramanujam, an IPS officer, would be the Member-Secretary. According to the police policy note, the Commission would go into general conditions of service, welfare; powers and duties of the police force in maintaining law and order, detection of crime and regulation of traffic; modernisation of organisation and methods, investigation facilities, statistics and records, research and planning; manpower planning, recruitment, training and placement; relationship with public and coordination between courts and magistracy and other government departments.
