AP boys in last eight

KOLKATA: Andhra Pradesh upset defending champion Madhya Pradesh 65-52 in the concluding Group A league match to ensure a direct quarterfinal berth in the 33rd sub-junior National basketball here at the Netaji Indoor Stadium on Thursday.

D. Anil and S. Sairam, scoring 21 and 15 points respectively, powered Andhra past the strong M.P. team, which was forced to play the pre-quarterfinals.

However, M.P. managed to move into the last eight stage, getting past the challenge of Orissa 76-69, in the pre-quarterfinals. Delhi, Manipur and Mizoram were the three other teams also moving into the quarterfinals.

In the girls' section, Karnataka powered past Delhi 51-17 to book a quarterfinal berth. Maharashtra, Haryana and Punjab were the other three teams moving up into the next round.

The results: Pre-quarterfinals: Boys: Manipur 58 bt Jharkhand 54; Mizoram 62 bt Tamil Nadu 33; M.P. 76 bt Orissa 69, Delhi 52 bt U.P. 31. Girls: Karnataka 51 bt Delhi 17; Maharashtra 42 bt Kerala 18; Haryana 41 bt Orissa 15; Punjab 45 bt Jharkhand 23.

Group league: Boys: Group A: Andhra Pradesh 65 bt Madhya Pradesh 52. Group C: Delhi 65 bt Haryana 27.

Girls: Group D: Jharkhand 41 bt Uttaranchal 37; Punjab 65 bt Andhra Pradesh 39. Group E: Kerala 21 bt Manipur 17.
