HYDERABAD: The marathon arguments in the criminal appeal filed by the State in the case pertaining to murder of Rajareddy, father of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, came to an end on Thursday and the Bench reserved the judgment. The accused person in the murder was acquitted by the court in Kadapa district and the State had filed the appeal. — Legal Correspondent

Three tribals die after consuming gruel

KADAPA: Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Board Swaminathan formally inaugurated Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) engineering college at Pulivendula on Thursday. He also unveiled a plaque for boys' hostel on the campus. JNTU Vice-Chancellor Rajagopal inaugurated girls' hostel. 15 hurt in road accident

KADAPA: Fifteen persons sustained injuries when an APSRTC bus hit a tipper, near Venkatasettipalle village, in Badvel mandal on Thursday. Ryots ends life

ANANTAPUR: A farmer of Narpala village G. Nagalingaiah, 28, died while undergoing treatment at Kurnool Government General Hospital on Thursday. He attempted suicide on Sunday by hanging himself after his borewell dried. — Staff Reporter

FFW rice seized

KADAPA: Revenue officials seized 147 bags of rice worth Rs.1.70 lakhs, allotted for National Food-for-Work programme, by intercepting a lorry, near Autonagar, in Proddatur on Thursday.

Joint Collector Kanthilal Dande was tipped off by an anonymous caller, according to officials. Driver and cleaner of the lorry are absconding. A case has been registered. - Staff Reporter

Goud's effigy burnt

KURNOOL: Congress leaders led by DCC secretary M. Sudhakar Babu took out a rally and burnt the effigy of TDP leader T. Devender Goud here on Thursday in protest against his remarks on Challa Ramakrishna Reddy, MLA, in the House on Wednesday.

Protesters held up traffic for some time and burnt the effigy after shouting slogans against Mr. Goud. Deputy Mayor Abdul Razak, DCC vice-president Y.V. Ramana, secretary M.P. Tippanna and others took part. - Staff Reporter

Magisterial probe into lock-up death

Kakinada: The Collector has appointed RDO Kakinada as enquiry officer to conduct magisterial inquiry into the lockup death in Karapa of Medapati Lakshmana Reddy, native of G.Mamidada village of Pedapudi mandal on August 6 midnight.

The Magisterial inquiry will now be conducted on September 5 at 10.30 am at the RDO's office here .The RDO advised people having knowledge about the incident to depose before him during the inquiry on that day. - Correspondent

Additional seats sanctioned

Kakinada: The All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and the State Government have sanctioned 60 additional seats in computer science and engineering (CSE) to Pragati Engineering College from this academic year, according to Paruchuri Krishnarao, college chairman. He said these additional seats were included in this year's counselling. - Correspondent

MSP for paddy

Kakinada: Joint Collector C Sudarsan Reddy has said that that the Central Government has notified the minimum support price for kharif marketing season for common variety of quintal of paddy as Rs.580 and Rs.40 as bonus.

For A grade paddy, the MSP was Rs.610 and the ryot would get Rs.650 in total along with Rs.40 bonus. - Correspondent

Action plan released

VIZIANAGARAM: The SC Society has released action plan with Rs.11.87 crores for 2006-07. At a press conference here on Thursday, Society Executive Director G. Krishna said welfare programmes such as purchase of private lands, land development and horticulture crops would be taken up for the benefit of 8,840 persons. He said loans would be given through banks for purchasing milch cattle.
