NEW DELHI: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh presented the Punjab Rattan Award to writer Khushwant Singh at a function here on Thursday. The award, carrying a silver plaque and a citation, was in recognition of his outstanding and prolific writing in English.

Capt. Amarinder Singh said the Government had instituted the award to felicitate personalities who excelled in art, literature and culture, transcending national boundaries.

"Sardar Khushwant Singh, who has become a legend and icon in the lifetime, is the sub-continent's most prolific writer. It is a humble effort on the part of the State Government to bestow this honour on this great son of India who has ruled over the hearts of millions of his readers across the globe through his unique style of writing," he said.

Mr. Khushwant Singh said he was indebted to the Government for bestowing the award on him. He appealed to the Chief Minister to entrust the task of translation of Punjabi writings into English to scholars so that the real essence of Punjabi culture could be disseminated.
