Police directed to provide security

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Police Commissioner of Delhi to provide security to Court Commissioners and members of the Monitoring Committee dealing with unauthorised constructions in the Capital.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Rekha Sharma ordered security for the Court-appointed officials when the Chairman of the Monitoring Committee, R.S. Gupta, informed the Court that a mob had attacked the residence of B.L. Vohra, a member of the Committee, vandalised his house, and abused his family members when he was not at home.

In another incident, some persons had criminally intimidated and assaulted Court Commissioner Rakesh Khanna.

Mr. Gupta submitted that though in both cases the local police had registered cases and some persons had been arrested, local leaders who had instigated the crowd to attack Mr. Vohra's house were yet to be brought to book.

In the case of the assault on Mr. Khanna, the police were yet to arrest a staff of a Deputy Commissioner's office involved in the incident, the Court was told.

The Bench directed electronic news channels to submit unedited audio or video CDs to the police to allow them to identify the culprits. The Bench directed the police to file a report about investigation to the Court before the next date of hearing on October 6.
