Ex-naxal shot dead

KHAMMAM: A surrendered naxalite was shot dead reportedly by the members of the CPI (ML Prajapratighatna) Ravi dalam in Pagideru village on Friday night. The police said that Chimala Bakkaraju, 45, who was with the same group earlier, was dragged from his house and killed in the nearby forests for being a "police informer." Bakkaraju had surrendered to the police four years ago.

Rare ritual in Tirumala temple

TIRUPATI: The deity of Vepanjeri Sri Lakshminarayana Swamy will be given a celestial bath with water from 1,008 tender coconuts at a rare ritual on Sunday on the premises of Sri Venkateswara Children's High School in Bhavani Nagar here at 10 a.m.

The event, named `Sahasra Narikela Theertha Abhisheka Mahotsavam', is to propitiate the Lord to ensure early rain, the temple trustee K.S.Sridhar explains. Devotees can offer tender coconuts for the ritual. Details can be had at 2220306. — Staff Reporter

`No change in Angapradakshinam'

TIRUPATI: TTD Executive Officer, A.P.V. Narayana Sarma said the Devasthanams were not contemplating any change in the `Angapradakshinam' system. His assertion comes in the wake of apprehensions among the public and in a section of the media that the TTD was mulling over the possibility of shifting it from its present position to outside the temple in view of increase in the number of pilgrims performing the ritual.

Student ends life

KARIMNAGAR: A degree student committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of his house in Kattarampur locality of Karimnagar town on Saturday. Police sources said that C. Kishore,21, had failed in some subjects of his degree examinations and this must have led to his taking the step. His father, Rajanna lodged a complaint with the police. — Staff Reporter

Award for doctor

HYDERABAD: K.S. Ratnakar, chairman, Global Medical Education and Research Centre, and chief of laboratory services, Global Hospitals, has been selected for the "Dr. Shanker Banerjee Memorial Award" for 2006 for "distinguished services for the uplift of pathology."

Prof. Ratnakar, an MD from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, has worked as head of pathology at the institute and NIMS. — Special Correspondent

FCI move on maize

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Region of Food Corporation of India (FCI) said on Saturday that it would issue orders to lift 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of maize procured by various State agencies after receiving instructions from the FCI headquarters. Ravi Kota, FCI General Manager, said in a press release that the region had floated tender enquiry towards the sale of the maize stocks procured in the State during kharif and rabi 2005-06.— Special Correspondent

Village secretaries' posts to be filled

ONGOLE: Minister for Panchayat Raj J.C. Diwakara Reddy said that notification would be issued soon to fill 1,500 posts of village secretaries. VISAKHAPATNAM: A leader of the banned CPI (Maoist) Gopi alias Azad was reportedly picked up by the police at Vizianagaram bus station on August 28. It was not known to where Gopi was shifted. Special Correspondent

Tricycles given

KADAPA: Yerraguntla market committee chairman Viswabhargava Reddy gave away tricycles to physically challenged persons under aegis of YS Jagan Trust at the market yard in Yerraguntla on Saturday. Lauding the Trust's gesture, he said physically challenged persons needed financial assistance. Yerraguntla MRO Sivaramaiah and MPDO Prabhakar Reddy hoped that the trust would take up more social service activities. Trust leader M. KADAPA: Pulivendula OSD Krishnamohan Reddy on Saturday directed Rural Water Supply officials to ensure adequate water supply in Pulivendula town. Addressing a review meeting at Pulivendula, he suggested augmentation of water supply by using the second pipeline at Venkatapuram as an additional pipeline from Pulivendula Branch Canal. Labourers injured

KADAPA: A dozen labourers were injured when a tipper overturned near Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Kadapa town on Saturday. Those injured included Sriramulu, Venkatamma, Thimmamma, Anjanamma, Ananthamma, Srinivasa Rao, Mallesh, Lakshman, Nagabhushanam and Varalu, all belonging to Kurnool district, were admitted to RIMS hospital. They were travelling atop a tractor carrying stone slabs and cement bags, to work in the Nirmithi Kendram near RIMS, when the tractor overturned while trying to avoid hitting a buffalo. -Staff Reporter

Temple closure

KURNOOL: Srisailam temple will be closed mid-day onwards on September 7 in connection with lunar eclipse. The temple will be closed for darshan around 2.30 p.m. and will be reopened the next day at 4.30 a.m. after `samprokshana', according to a press note from the temple. -Staff Reporter

Workshop on surgical oncology

Kakinada: A workshop on surgical oncology will be organised at the Government General Hospital here on Sunday. D K. Babji, convenor, said the workshop included live demonstrations of critical surgeries. Ch. Mohana Vamsi, director and chief surgical oncologist, Indo-American Cancer Institute and Research Centre, Hyderabad, would be the chief guest and conduct the surgeries. — Correspondent

Cyclist knocked down

Kakinada : A cyclist - Adari Veera Raghava (33) was knocked down fatally by a speeding van near Chinnampet junction on the national highway near Yelesweram on Saturday. The Yelesweram police registered a case.

In another case, Pydimalla Raju (30) a farm worker was stabbed to death, allegedly by his rival while he was asleep in SC colony of Vedurupaka village on Saturday. He was rushed to Ramachandrapuram Government hospital where he died. — Correspondent

Fire averted

VIZIANAGARAM : A major fire was averted when a gas cylinder being used for cooking mid-day meal for children of Municipal Elementary School at Bungaveedhi here caught fire on Saturday morning. Fire personnel put out the fire with the help of locals. The loss was put at Rs.3000, said Fire department officer B. Ammi Naidu. — Correspondent

Body found

VIZIANAGARAM: The body of B. Narasinga Rao (35) of Poolbaugh was found in bushes near his house on Saturday. Narasinga Rao was last seen on Friday afternoon. The II Town police registered a case following a complaint by his mother and sent the body for post-mortem. — Correspondent

One drowned

JEYPORE: Two persons were drowned and one of them was rescued safely from the flooded Bhaskal river near Umerkote in Nowrangpur district on Wednesday when they joined the Ganesh immersion celebrations from Bhamini village. While Sripati was rescued, the police are searching for Narayana Bhetra.

JEYPORE: Hero Honda Motors Limited zonal head, East (Kolkata), Ranjan Mittal inaugurated a new showroom of Hero Honda motorcycles here recently. Among others, former Minister Rabinarayan Nanda and the dealer Rajpal Khurana participated.

Jeypore: Former Minister Rabinarayan Nanda has called upon people and leaders of various political parties to join hands with the local municipal council for all-round development of the town. Ban likely on bottled water without ISI mark

ELURU: C. Nagaraja Rao, Regional Director, Department of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, on Saturday informed that efforts were under way to ban bottled water without ISI mark in all urban areas falling under Rajahmundry region.

ONGOLE: Minister for Panchayat Raj J.C. Diwakar Reddy on Saturday laid foundation stone for a Kalyanamandapam (Rs. 10 lakhs), shopping complex (Rs. 21 lakhs) at Valluramma temple near here on Saturday.

He also laid stone for Ankamma devastanam kalyanamandapam and Rajiv children's park at Santhanuthalapadu.

Farmers stage protest

KHAMMAM: Backed by all political parties, farmers staged a massive protest in Gandampalli village of Bayyaram mandal on Saturday, demanding seven hours uninterrupted power supply to the agriculture services. Hundreds of farmers squatted on the road protesting against what they called frequent cuts, low voltage and irregular supply affecting pump sets. They put off the supply from transformers and put the sub station under lock. - Staff Reporter
