Adikavi Nannaya University (AKNU) in Rajahmundry is the first university to start its academic year among the three new universities sanctioned in the State. Keeping the demand for post graduation courses in East and West Godavari, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts the State Higher Education Council and Government had decided to establish the university.

"This is the dream of thousands of students, parents, teachers and academicians in this region. Finally we got it with the support of the State Government and peoples representatives of all the four districts," said Vundavelli Aruna Kumar and Rowthu Suryaprakasha Rao, Member of Parliament and MLA respectively from Rajahmundry. Andhra University is the parent university for Nannaya University. L. Venugopala Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of AU was appointed in charge of the new university and the entire responsibility of day-to-day activities are being looked after by C. Ratnam in the capacity of Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of Nannaya University.

While the other two new universities in Kadapa and Nizamabad are yet to complete their admission process, the AKNU has finished this process by conducting entrance exam for four courses, then counselling and finally admissions in the first week of August. Prof. Ratnam said that the structures of the new university would come up after two years. Land for AKNU has been finalised and 308 acres near Velugubanda on the outskirts of Rajahmundry has been identified for acquisition.

Job market

The new university began its academic activity with six courses among which three are unique. "Courses are designed in a way that suits the requirements of the job market. We involved CIEFL, Hyderabad; experts from major industries and experienced syllabus designers for designing the courses," said Dr. Venugopala Reddy.

According to Prof. Ratnam, the M.A. English (soft skills) is unique to the university. Among the five other courses, 30 seats each of MBA and MCA were filled through ICET. MSc Geo-informatics is a new course and except for JNTU, no other university has this course, except at the teaching and research level. At Nannaya University the geo-informatics course is a comprehensive one, consisting geology, geophysics, geography and computer training. All the six courses have 30 seats each and each course has been designed by the Board of Studies keeping in view the job requirements in the market. Prof. Ratnam said they were contemplating a five-year career guidance integrated course. "Students who have finished Inter with science and arts subjects are confused about their future. They have not planned for their career and are aimless. So we have decided to introduce a new course soon," he added. "We are very happy that a cherished dream of Rajahmundry has been fulfilled. Now we don't need to send our girls and boys to either Vizag or Vijayawada for PG courses,"said Y.S. Narasimha Rao (historian), Chaganti Saratbabu, Varalakshmi, G. Samuel Moses (senior lecturers) and Viswantha Gopalakrishna, Principal of Oriental College.
