BANGALORE: The 4,000-acre Bangalore International Airport premises at Devanahalli will boast of a world-class four-km runway with a width of 60 metres, and the airport project will be completed within the next 16 months, Javeed Shakil, Project Manager, L&T - ECC, Bangalore International Airport Project, said on Thursday. Delivering a lecture on "Construction of Bangalore International Airport Project" here, Mr. Shakil said the airport would have a passenger terminal building with a pre-cast roof element with 53 entry counters. There would be two facades - north and south in the airport and an air traffic control room with superior facilities. Mr. Shakil's lecture was part of the "Concrete Day" celebrations organised by the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) in association with Grasim Industries Ltd. The event also featured an award ceremony honouring Karnataka's outstanding concrete engineers and concrete structures for 2006. V. Ramachandra, Chairman, ICI, Karnataka - Bangalore Centre, said, "Our aim is to promote the growth of concrete construction across the country and to recognise outstanding construction and performers from construction field." He said that the institute had been organising seminars, workshops and training programmes for members and students. O.P. Puranmalka, Group Executive President, Grasim Industries Ltd., presented the "Birla Super Endowment Award for Outstanding Concrete Engineer of Karnataka - 2006" to R. Jagdish, former professor and chairman, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Bangalore University, in recognition of his contribution to the academy and research activities on concrete structures. The "Birla Plus Endowment Award for Outstanding Concrete Structure of Karnataka" was presented to the Cafeteria Building, ABB Peenya Campus, Bangalore, considering the innovative architecture, design and construction of the project, Mr. Ramachandra said. S.V. Patil, Vice-President (Marketing), Grasim industries Ltd., and R.N. Krishna, Secretary General, ICI, were present.
