Change mindset
WOMEN SUFFER both at home and in the workplace because the male is reluctant to accept the simple fact that the other fifty per cent of the population has its rights too. The truth is that despite educational qualifications and work experience, most women cannot get beyond a mid-level position in most organisations. It may well change now but men need to change their mindset first. Sowmya Rao, Wheeler Road
A better deal
EVEN IN the most cruel cases of dowry harassment, the law often gives the benefit of doubt to the husband and his family. Some even talk that women are misusing the law. No Indian woman will approach the police or courts for fear of social stigma and do so only under extreme compulsion. Only when more women occupy top position in the Government and law enforcement agencies can we hope for a better deal. Preeti Fernandes, St John's Road
Not less efficient
THE NOTION that women want only nine-to-five kind of jobs and cannot work longer and have other distractions like home and children are true only to some extent. Many career women are ready to make personal sacrifices for the sake of the organisation they work for. Women are definitely not any less efficient at work. Sheila Raj, Cox Town
Embarrassed to complain
THERE ARE enough men who are sensitive to the needs of the other gender. The sad fact is that some men in positions of power misbehave with women employees. Many women are too embarrassed to complain or protest. Dowry harassment will continue until women become more assertive. K. Mohan Ram, Lingarajapuram
Discrimination
WHEN THERE is no gender equality in the government organisations, how can one expect it in the private sector? S.V.Satyanarayana, J.P Nagar NEXT WEEK: The electronic media has often been accused of transgressing limits of news gathering ethics to garner more viewers and higher ratings to attract more advertising. Sections of the print media have begun following this trend too and perhaps deprive readers of useful information while being entertaining.
