MUMBAI: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Supriya Sule, 37, was on Saturday elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha in the election necessitated by the death of Vasant Chavan, MP, in July. The nominations of other candidates in the fray Milind Salvi, Bharatlal Bhatia and Ashok Patil were rejected as they did not have a proposer or a seconder. They had also not filed affidavits listing their assets and liabilities. Ms. Sule, the only daughter of Union Agriculture Minister and NCP president Sharad Pawar, emerged as the lone candidate. The BJP-Shiv Sena had not fielded anyone for the election. The elections to the Rajya Sabha seat were to be held on September 18 and the last date for withdrawals was September 11.
