HYDERABAD: A new type of road-laying technique by recycling the existing asphalt for a superior riding quality, improved drainage and no rise in the road height was demonstrated to the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad on Saturday by a private firm.

In this `Hot-in-place' recycling, the existing asphalt surface is softened with heat, removed and mixed with a recycling agent and re-laid without disturbing the ground. It was pointed out that flooding during the monsoon can be prevented and the height of the medians, pavements, manholes and the likes need not be increased, as road height remains the same.

Higher costs

Chief operating officer of Telcon Ecoroad Resurfaces Private Ltd., (TERPL), H.K. Sehgal, gave a presentation on this new method to engineering wing officials. Though the cost was definitely more than the conventional road laying method, the corporation appears to be keen to try it out on some road stretches if the firm comes up with a good proposal.

Earlier in the day, Commissioner Sanjay Jaju accompanied by senior officials inspected the Ashoknagar garbage transit station and interacted with the rickshaw pullers. He also inspected the ongoing construction of houses for weaker sections at Bathkamma Kunta and interacted with the public.
