TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University plans to start two constituent colleges at Perambalur and Orathanadu in Thanjavur district shortly.

While the constituent college at Perambalur will be a co-educational institution, the one in Orathanadu will be for women. The colleges will start functioning this academic year itself.

This is the first time that the university has ventured into opening constituent colleges of its own. The State Government will support the establishment in running the two colleges for an initial period of five years.

The colleges are being established at the behest of the respective Members of Parliament of Perambalur and Thanjavur, A. Raja and S.S. Palanimanickam, respectively.

The Vice-Chancellor, C. Thangamuthu, told The Hindu that the Perambalur district administration had identified a temporary building where the college would function initially. About 10 acres of land has been earmarked for construction of permanent buildings.

The Thanjavur district administration has come forward to hand over a chathram on a permanent basis to the women's college at Orathanadu. The university has identified the Directors for the two institutions and is in the process of posting the faculty. Though the academic year is under way, it hopes to draw "left over" students and those planning to pursue distance education programmes.

The colleges will offer B.Com., B.Sc (Medical Instrumentation) and B.Sc. Computer Science and five-year integrated M.Sc. Bio-Technology, MCA and MBA courses. They will also offer certificate courses in Tally, Desktop Publishing and Effective Communication.

Applications , to be issued from September 15, can be obtained from the office of the Registrar of the university on any working day or downloaded the same from the website www.bdu.ac.in.

Arrangements have also been made for issue of applications at the Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College at Perambalur and K.N. Government College for Women, Thanjavur.
