A major tragedy averted in Jammu, says IG

Jammu: Seven kg of improvised explosive device (IED) was detected by a civilian near the Government Medical College and Chest Hospital here on Monday night and later defused by a bomb disposal squad.

Inspector-General of Police S.P. Vaid told The Hindu that a major tragedy has been averted with the timely detection of the device.The hospital is flooded with patients and their relatives day and night. Located in the heart of the city, it caters not only to the urban masses but also to those from the far-flung areas of the State. Victims of militancy also come here for treatment.

The State Government has rewarded Rs. 50, 000 to Girdari Lal, the alert civilian.

As the news spread, security in and around major hospitals and public institutions in the State was stepped up. Militants killed a middle-aged Gujjar couple in Rajouri district on Tuesday.
