HIGH ALERT: Delhi Police personnel in anti-riot gear deployed outside the Jama Masjid after clashes between two groups in New Delhi on Friday.

NEW DELHI: Two groups that were protesting against alleged controversial remarks of the Pope clashed outside the Jama Masjid on Friday. The police had to use mild force to disperse the gathering. Two persons were injured in the clash.

The incident took place late in the afternoon after a group, led by the Delhi Assembly Deputy Speaker Shoaib Iqbal, reached the Jama Masjid shouting slogans against the Pope. At that time, the Shahi Imam was addressing a gathering on the same issue inside the mosque.

According to the police, it was a clash of egos that resulted in an altercation between the groups. They pelted stones at each other.

Senior police officers reached the spot and urged restraint. Following the incident, additional police force was deployed.

A case of rioting was registered at the Jama Masjid police station. No arrests were made.
