Ryots protest

KADAPA: Farmers staged dharna and rasta roko before Chakrayapet MRO office on Thursday demanding release of irrigation water from Veligallu project to the mandal. -Staff Reporter

Signature campaign KADAPA: CITU functionaries launched a signature campaign at Apsara circle here on Thursday demanding enactment of legislation for unorganised labour and petty workers.

Telugu Desam Party SC cell leader B. Jakraiah, who launched the signature campaign, demanded a comprehensive legislation to ensure welfare of unorganised labour. CITU leader C. Sekhar accused the Government of being lax towards unorganised labour comprising Dalits, weaker sections and minorities. -Staff Reporter

General strike

KADAPA: LIC Employees Union general secretary B.V.S. Raju has expressed support to the Joint Action Committee of Government employees, teachers and trade unions' call for a general strike on December 24. He demanded upholding of the workers' right to wage strike. He also sought proper implementation of labour laws and opposed proposed privatisation of public sector units and industries. Steps should be taken to curb harassment of women at the work place, he demanded. Employees are enormously burdened by lack of recruitment to fill vacancies arising out of transfers, promotions and retirement. -Staff Reporter

Free DTP course

KADAPA: National Council For Promotion of Urdu Language under Union Ministry of Human Resource Development is offering a one-year diploma in computer applications and multilingual DTP for poor and disadvantageous persons, according to Rahamaniya CAM DTP Centre in-charge M.A. Gafoor.

In a statement on Thursday, he said that persons passing SSC and in the age group of 18 to 35 years would be eligible. Textbooks costing Rs. 4,000 would be given free of cost to students selected for the course, he said. Boy killed

KADAPA: A six-year-old boy Devananda Reddy was killed and his father Mahadeva Reddy was injured when a jeep hit their bicycle near Devapatla Harijanawada in Sambepalle mandal on Thursday.

While Devananda Reddy succumbed to injuries on his way to hospital, Mahadeva Reddy was admitted to Rayachoti Government Hospital, according to the police. They were going to Vattamvaripalle when the accident occurred. Sambepalle police registered a case. -Staff Reporter

Campus recruitment

KURNOOL: Matrix Group of Companies, a multinational company, based in Hyderabad will undertake campus recruitment at the Government Degree College in Doctors's Colony here on September 28, according to a press note by Principal R.L. Narsaiah.

Candidates, who passed B.Sc with Botany as main subject, will be recruited for multiple jobs in technical, sales, marketing, research and development fields. The selected candidates will have to appear for an interview in Hyderabad. -Staff Reporter

Man killed

KURNOOL: One person died and four others were hurt when an autorickshaw and an APSRTC bus collided near Allagadda in Kurnool district on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Bandi Tirupal (32). -Staff Reporter

Landmines unearthed

WARANGAL: The district police unearthed two landmines pitched under a culvert in Dhamannapet village in Regonda mandal here on Thursday.

According to information reaching here, the police also detected one more landmine at Bhagirdhipet and Gudepalli villages in the mandal. Sensing trouble in unearthing it, they detonated it on the spot. The police said they were planted by the Maoist party naxals. Regonda Sub Inspector Bharat said on credible information raided the houses in Dhamannapet village and during the search operations, they found 50 detonators and 25 gelatine sticks. - Staff Reporter

ACB raids properties of civil supplies official

ADILABAD: A team of Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) comprising Inspectors Seetarumulu and K. Krishna from Nizamabad and Ashok Chakarvarti from Medak conducted simultaneous raids on properties belonging to Bismillah Khan, an official of the Civil Supplies department, on Thursday. The official hailing from Adilabad works at Huzurabad in Karimnagar district. The raid were conducted at a three-storeyed house at Bhuktapur, a two-storeyed house at Kailasnagar, three shops and two plots of land on NH 7 near Imam Ali building and a nine acre farm at Devapur village. - Staff Reporter

Priest dies in accident

VIJAYAWADA: A priest in Eluru diocese Eethikkonel Thomas (78), a native of Kerala, was killed in a road accident on Nandigama bypass road on NH-9 on Thursday. The accident occurred when he was being shifted in an ambulance to a hospital in Hyderabad for kidney treatment. A lorry coming in the opposite direction hit the ambulance killing Fr. Thomas on the spot. The lorry driver escaped from the spot. - Staff Reporter

Quarry blast: 2 killed

Sangareddy: Two workers belonging to Karimnagar district were killed in a blast at a private quarry of Ramayampet on Wednesday. Devaraj (22) and Tirupathi (20) who were trying to rectify the wiring connected to the explosives died on the spot when it exploded suddenly. -Staff Reporter

5 Maoists surrender

VISAKHAPATNAM: Five Maoists belonging to north coastal Andhra districts surrendered before Visakhapatnam range DIG Govind Singh here on Thursday. They were: Pongi Julimi alias Jaya, Vantala Singaraju alias Chandu, Marri Tirusu alias Sanju, Battina Mohan alias Venu and Kadraka Sita alias Sirisha. Visakhapatnam district SP J.G. Murali and his Srikauklam counterpart Manish Kumar Sinha said lack of faith in the ideology, health problems and family pressures forced them to quit the party. - Staff Reporter

`No probe into ORR'

HYDERABAD: Finance Minister K. Rosaiah has turned down the demand made by the Opposition to conduct a probe into the alleged irregularities in the alienation of land for the Outer Ring Road (ORR). Bandaru raps YSR

HYDERABAD: Senior BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya has demanded a halt to issuing `bogus notifications' for acquiring farmers' lands and withdrawal of notices. In a letter to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, he faulted him for saying that not a cent of land acquired from farmers was auctioned. He said the notifications being issued in Ranga Reddy and Medak districts for acquisition of lands were for private projects and not for public cause. - Special Correspondent

Killed in wall collapse

Kakinada: A person Beeram Krishnaiah (68) was killed on the spot when the mud wall of his house collapsed on him while he was asleep in Rapaka Meraka Veedhi under Korukonda police station limits on Thursday. - Correspondent
