"Permit toddy tapping"

TIRUPUR: Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam founder and actor Vijayakant has urged the Government to permit tapping of toddy from coconut and palm trees.

Campaigning for his party candidates at Avanashi on Tuesday night, Mr. Vijaykant said the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government did not have a long-term vision for generating employment to thousands of youths in the State. If his party came to power, he assured that it would put an end to the problem of unemployment by opening industrial estates in all the districts.

Mr. Vijaykant said his party would contain the menace of mosquitoes in a year if it was voted to power. The DMDK would work for improving the quality of education in government and municipal schools. — Staff Reporter

Two washed away

in the Cauvery

Dharmapuri: Two persons from Bangalore were reportedly washed away in the Cauvery at Hogenakkal, 46 km from here, on Tuesday. According to police, Vinodh (27) and Sekar (21) had come along with a team to Hogenakkal on a sightseeing tour. When they attempted to bathe near Kattaru, they were caught in a swirl and were washed away. Fire and Rescue Services personnel and boat owners were engaged in search operations along the banks of the river. The police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

MKU Senate

elections postponed

MADURAI: The Madurai Kamaraj University has postponed the Senate elections in view of the local body polls.

As per the original schedule, election of 15 members to the Senate from the registered graduates' constituency was to be held on October 15. A press release from S. Shanmugiah, Registrar in-charge, said the date would be announced later. — Staff Reporter

Buses terminated at State borders

Hosur: Inter-State buses and heavy commercial vehicles from Tamil Nadu were terminated at the State borders at Jujuvadi and Andhivadi following the bandh call given by Kannada activists in Karnataka on Wednesday.

TNSTC buses proceeding from Dharmapuri, Palacode, Thally, Denkanikottai and Krishnagiri were halted at Jujuvadi, Andhivadi check posts and Hosur bus stand. Even private buses proceeding towards Bangalore were halted at the Karnataka border at Athipalli. TNSTC depots in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts have been instructed not to operate buses on the NH-7 and Bangalore - Sarjapur National Highway till further orders. — Staff Reporter

TNAU to hold

campus interview

COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) will conduct its 78th campus interview on October 6 at the Directorate of Students' Welfare, TNAU. Around 14 agricultural companies based in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra will participate.

Rajshree Sugars and Chemicals, Coimbatore, Amrutham Bio organic Research Centre, Palakkad, Bayer Crop Science Limited, Mumbai, and KF Bioplants Pvt.Limited, Pune, are some of the companies that will participate.
