TRAFFIC HELD UP: Traffic on the Kancheepuram-Chengalpattu Road is blocked following a head-on collision between a van and an empty sand lorry at Thimmarajanpet near Kancheepuram on Tuesday.
KANCHEEPURAM: Nineteen persons, including three male members, sustained injuries in a road accident involving a van and a sand-lorry on Kancheepuram-Chengalpattu Road at Thimmarajanpet near here on Tuesday morning. According to police, the mishap took place around 7 a.m. when the van, transporting labourers from Muthialpet and surrounding areas to an export-oriented garment unit at Vandalur, and an empty sand-lorry proceeding towards Kancheepuram from Chengalpattu collided. In the impact, the lorry capsised on the road obstructing the flow of traffic and the van was heavily damaged.
Garment unit workers
All the 16 female passengers, Gopi of Kaliyanur, who was also working in the same garment unit, the van driver Sivakumar of Poi Illuppai village near Sembarambakkam and the lorry driver, Pattabiraman of Velachery sustained injuries. They were rushed to the Government District Headquarters Hospital and were admitted as inpatients.
