Sportstar Trophy from October 10

Mumbai: The Sportstar Trophy, Mumbai Cricket Association's under-19 selection trial tournament for the Cooch Behar Trophy, will be played at the Elf-Vengsarkar Cricket Academy and Karnatak Sporting Association ground from October 10.

Prof. Ratnakar Shetty, Head-Administration BCCI, addressing the media on Wednesday said, "The Sportstar Trophy has become a very important tournament in the MCA's annual calendar and provides opportunities for junior cricketers to make an impression. I thank The Hindu group for sponsoring this tournament."

Former Mumbai captain Milind Rege said that a majority of Mumbai's cricketers have figured in the Sportstar Trophy. Rege will inaugurate the tournament on October 10.

Four teams — Vijay Merchant XI, Vijay Manjrekar XI, Dattu Phadkar XI and Khandu Rangnekar XI — will take part in the competition to be played in a round-robin format. The winner will receive the Sportstar Trophy. The six man of the match award winners will receive a gift voucher worth Rs. 2,000 each, the player of the tournament will get the `Ramakant Desai crystal trophy' and a cricket kit worth Rs. 20,000.

The MCA under-19 selection committee will decide the man of the match and player of the tournaments. The best fielder of the tournament will receive a cash prize of Rs.1000, donated by the family of former MCA secretary and vice-president Bal Mahadalkar.
