Bangalore: The former Professor of Physics at the Indian Institute of Science G. Suryan (82) died of cardiac arrest here on Thursday. Born near Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, Prof. Suryan studied at the University of Mysore and started his career with the Indian Institute of Science in 1947. Along with Prof. A. Vasudeva Murthy he was responsible for establishing the only semiconductor silicon factory in the country, resulting in substantial foreign exchange savings. After retirement, Prof. Suryan continued to be active in research and started a non-profit Research and Development organisation and was carrying out further industrial work, particularly for the vacuum industry. He was responsible for developing new processes for semi conductor silicon aimed at reducing costs and improving energy efficiency.
