Checking chikungunya and creating awareness of cleanliness

TAMBARAM: Volunteers of the NSS of Institute of Road Transport Polytechnic in Chromepet, Tambaram Municipality and members of the Green Cross of India, an NGO, started mass fogging and a clean-up campaign in Tambaram to prevent the spread of chikungunya and to create awareness among the residents on keeping the surroundings clean.

They started the campaign from Amar Nagar Park in Ward No.2. H. Mohamed Shabirullah, principal of the polytechnic, said students of the institution, regularly involved in social activities, thought it appropriate to initiate this campaign.

Despite widespread prevalence of illness caused by poor hygiene and fear of epidemics, cleanliness took a beating in the urban local bodies.

And the campaign was being done with due permission from the Tambaram Municipality and also with assistance from their sanitary staff.

Mr. Shabirullah said fogging in open areas and spraying of insecticides in drains and stagnant water would be done simultaneously.
