HYDERABAD: The Government has decided against retrenching vocational junior lecturers on humanitarian grounds but downgrading the status of some of them to that of Time Scale Category in the event of irregularities. This decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Tuesday. Those who joined at Minimum Time Scale of Pay without proper educational qualifications would be downgraded to the category of contract lecturers and those without required educational qualifications would be made lab assistants and workshop assistants. The details were being worked out, a press release of the Chief Minister's Office stated here. As of now, 1,508 lecturers were working in the vocational stream out of whom, 124 were on regular basis, 479 on Minimum Time Scale of Pay, 179 on part time hourly payment basis and 726 on contract basis. Some of the junior lecturers who had put in five years of service as on November 25, 1993, and having requisite qualifications were regularised following a GO in 1994. Those who had not put in five years of service but with necessary educational qualifications and having 16 hours workload were put on minimum time scale of pay. Following complaints that some vocational junior lecturers had been regularised without fulfilling the conditions of the GO, the Intermediate Board verified service records of all and found 962 cases of irregularities.
