The British Council has invited applications for long-term (open) scholarships and short-term (professional) scholarships. There are four long-term scholarships and three short-term scholarships under the Chevening scheme. Since its establishment in 1987, about 2,000 Indians have been awarded the British Chevening Scholarships. Long Term Scholarships The long-term scholarships are available for applicants who wish to apply for a one-year master's programme in the U.K. The candidate should apply directly to the institution/institutions of their choice for admission before applying for scholarship. While applying for the Chevening scholarship, the candidate must enclose proof that he has applied for admission to one or more institutions in the U.K. Moreover, the Chevening scholarship offer to such a candidate will be subject to a confirmed offer of admission from any one of the institutions that the candidate applied to. This offer must be given before May 31, 2007 failing which the scholarship offer will be withdrawn.

This scholarship is available for a master's programme in 13 subjects, including biodiversity conservation and natural resources, environmental policy and regulation, sustainable tourism, town planning, managed migration / immigration and intellectual property rights. The candidate can choose one or a combination of these courses. The candidate applying for this scheme should have two to three years of work experience in the field of study. Open Economic Governance, Finance and Public Administration Scholarships (A02): The study areas for this scheme include economics, public administration, international trade economics, development economics, banking and finance, public sector finance and regulation, competition and regulatory policy and international relations with a focus on trade and investment issues. The Open Science and Innovation Scholarships (A03) is available for those wishing to study a master's programme in science subjects, including mathematics (pure and applied), physics, chemistry and chemical engineering, materials science, electronics, computer science, biotechnology, bioinformatics and space sciences and engineering. Indian Friends of London School of Economics Shared Scholarships: Two of these scholarships - funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the London School of Economics and Political Science and Indian friends of LSE - are up for grabs this year for those wishing to do a master's programme in subjects relevant to the social, economic and scientific development of India. For all these scholarships, the applicant must be aged between 25 and 35 years as on November 30, 2006. Gurukul Senior Scholarship in Leadership and Excellence (B01): The programme is offered in association with the LSE. Applicants must be aged between 28 and 40 as on November 30, 2006. The programme begins in late September 2007 and up to 12 candidates will be selected for this scholarship. The Young Indian Print Journalists Programme and the Young Indian Broadcast Journalists Programme (B03 and B04, respectively): These two scholarships are for working journalists in the print and broadcast media. Applicants must be aged between 25 and 35 as on November 30, 2006. While the B04 programme will begin in July 2007, the B03 programme will begin in September 2007.
