Flights for Tirupati

TIRUPATI: Tirupati will be connected by air with cities like Delhi, Bangalore and Visakhapatnam in a couple of days. Indian Airlines will launch a daily flight from Tirupati to Delhi via Hyderabad. The maiden flight will reach here from Hyderabad on Sunday.

Air Deccan will launch a Bangalore-Tirupati-Vizag flight on Monday. The flight will leave Bangalore at 10.55 a.m. and reach Tirupati 11.45 a.m. It will leave Tirupati at 12.00 and reach Vizag at 13.40 p.m . — Staff Reporter

Furore over letter

KURNOOL: An alleged forged letter involving SKU PG centre Special Officer C. Umasankar created flutter on the campus on Saturday. Copies of a letter purported to have been written by the officer to a computer firm seeking kickbacks in the supply of computers to the PG centre were circulated. Dr. Umasankar who lodged a complaint with the police charging forgery and defamation said the Centre had never purchased computers and all orders were placed by the University. — Staff Reporter

Court ruling on polls

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the High Court directed the Election Commission to respond to the writ petition filed complaining against the procedure adopted for enrolment of voters for the graduate constituency of Legislative Council. The petitioner, G. Rama Murthy, chairman AP State Co-operative Urban Banks Federation Ltd, complained that the Commission permitted submission of the formats in bulk for enrolment of voters with regard to teacher's constituency. Such a provision is not available for enrolment of votes for the graduate constituency . — Legal Correspondent

Best teachers' awards

HYDERABAD: `Best teachers' awards will be presented to 228 school and college teachers from all over the State at a function to be held on November 1 at Ravindra Bharathi from 4 p.m. Chief Minister Y. Ruling on temples

HYDERABAD: The Government notification exempting Sri Shirdi Saibaba and Sri Kanyaka Parameshwari temples in the State from Section 15 and 29 of the Andhra Pradesh Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments Act of 1987 has come as a relief for the trusts and committees that run them. With this, control of these temples by the Endowments Department has been ruled out, thus fulfilling the trusts' long-standing demand. The Government took the view that these temples "are being managed well" by the respective trusts. . — Special Correspondent

Dharna against death threat to Gaddar

HYDERABAD: Representatives of SC, ST, BC and minorities organisations on Saturday staged a dharna at Ambedkar statue near Tank Bund here, protesting against the alleged threat to kill balladeer Gaddar between November 2 and 4 when he visits Sircilla, Jagtial and Karimnagar as part of Telangana `dhoom dham'. — Special Correspondent

Award mooted for boy

HYDERABAD: K. Narayana, CPI State Council Secretary, has suggested conferring `Sahasa Veera' award on 12-year-old Vamsi of Basangi in Vizianagaram district for saving five girls from drowning in the river Nagavali. Union Minister visits Puttaparthi

ANANTAPUR: Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel visited Puttaparthi in the district on Saturday. He arrived in a special flight from Bangalore and had a darshan of Satya Saibaba. On a request made by Chairman of Sri Satya Sai Urban Development Authority K. Satyanarayana for running regular (daily) flights to Puttaparathi either from Bangalore or Chennai, the Minister assured to examine the possibility.

Guntakal bandh

ANANTAPUR: A bandh was observed in Guntakal town and surrounding villages of the mandal in the district on Saturday on a call given by CPI in support of farmers' problems. CPI activists staged a unique protest by moving large number of cattle onto the premises of MRO office. They sought sufficient water release to ayacut under Guntakal Branch Canal, crop loss compensation of Rs. 3,000 per acre, writing off crop loans, waiving all educational fee among others. - Staff Reporter

Dharna by contract cement workers

KADAPA: Contractual workers of India Cements Ltd. at Yerraguntla staged a dharna before the Collectorate on Saturday demanding payment of bonus and ex gratia on par with permanent employees.

They decried payment of bonus of Rs. 2,500 to contractual workers and Rs. 12,000 to permanent workers. They sought job security and uniform bonus and ex gratia.

Free asthma camp

KURNOOL: A free asthma camp was conducted by retired professor of chest diseases G. Kullayappa at Maddhur Nagar here on Saturday. In all, 250 patients were examined and given medicines. Three injured

Tirumala: Three devotees, all hailing from Chilakur mandal of Gudur suffered injuries on Saturday when the car in which they were travelling was hit by a speeding APSRTC bus on the Papavinasanam road. According to the police, who have registered a case, all the injured were rushed to the Aswini hospital.

Jailed for dowry harassment

ELURU: City fast track court judge M. Ramakrishnaiah has sentenced Sk. Moulana of Jangareddygudem to undergo imprisonment for 10 years for indulging in dowry harassment that led to the death of his wife Imambee.

According to prosecution, Imambee committed suicide by hanging in 1998 due to harassment by her husband for more dowry. - Staff Reporter

SI suspended

ELURU: B. Peddi Raju, Sub-Inspector of Lakkavaram police station under the Jangareddygudem police sub-division, has been placed under suspension on the charge of harassing a woman.

According to Superintendent of Police M. Jaganmohan Reddy, the woman has petitioned that the SI subjected her to harassment over a petty dispute she had with her neighbours.

ELURU: A convention of farmers enjoying the lands in the islands of the Godavari river will be held at Peravali in West Godavari district on October 30 under the aegis of the Andhra Pradesh Rytu Sangham.

Civic staff to go on strike

ELURU: The employees of Eluru Municipal Corporation (EMC), affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress, will go on strike from November 1 demanding payment of salaries on a regular basis, according to its spokesman B. Venkateswara Rao.

B.Ed college golden jubilee in December

VIZIANAGARAM: M.R. Government College of Education here will celebrate golden jubilee on December 8, 9 and 10, college principal B. Narayana Murty told newsmen at a press conference on Thursday.

He said competitions in various disciplines for students would be conducted on the inaugural day, retired faculty members felicitated on the following day and a workshop on `Quality education in true sense' conducted on the concluding day. Ex-servicemen rally

Kakinada: Union Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju will inaugurate the ex-servicemen's rally at Sri Venkateswera function hall here on October 29, according to A.V. Ramana Murthy, district Sainik welfare officer.

Slum-dwellers seek pattas

VIZIANAGARAM: Slum-dwellers in Ashok Nagar, Poolbaugh, Jonnaguddi, Nalla Cheruvu, Bogguladibba, Salipeta, etc. in the town, under the aegis of the CPI (M), on Saturday laid a siege to the Revenue Divisional Office demanding pattas as per G.O. No.1601 for the land they had been living for decades.

Later, talking to newsmen, party divisional secretary Reddi Sankara Rao urged revenue officials to evict those who had encroached Government land near the Collectorate and elsewhere in the town . - Correspondent

Dies in road accident

Kakinada: Ravipati Satyanarayana, 45, who was travelling in an autorickshaw, was killed on the spot when he fell down due to sudden brakes applied by the driver near Bobbili bridge centre under Kadiyam police station limits on Saturday. - Correspondent

Rajahmundry: The 14th Rajahmundry division insurance employees' conference will be organised on Sunday and Monday in Bheemavaram of West Godavari district, which will be attended by employees of different insurance corporations of the two Godavari districts.
