Stalin visits flood-hit areas

CHENNAI: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday reviewed the flood situation in the State, more particularly in Chennai, besides visiting some flood-hit areas in the city.

After visiting the affected areas including Vyasarpadi, Perambur, Kotturpuram and Velachery along with Union Ministers Dayanidhi Maran and T.R. Baalu, Mr. Stalin told reporters that the situation was under control, thanks to the precautionary measures taken by the Government.

He said water logging had been prevented in many areas due to desilting of the drainage canals well ahead of the onset of the monsoon. The works would continue.

Panels formed

Committees comprising officials of different departments and agencies including the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Revenue Department, Public Works Department, Police and Chennai Corporation had been formed to monitor the situation in different zones in Chennai.

The officials, who were maintaining round-the-clock vigil, had been asked to provide necessary assistance to people.

Mr. Stalin said as of now the need to evacuate people residing in the low-lying areas had not arisen. Marriage halls and community halls had been kept ready to accommodate people from these areas if the rain continued.

Adequate supply of essential articles including food, medicines and water had been ensured in the flood-hit areas, Mr. Stalin said.

Subway inspected

The Minister inspected the waterlogged areas including the road under bridge at Ganesapuram in Vyasarpadi. He informed the people that the flooded subway would be cleared for traffic shortly, after the water was drained using pumps.

He distributed bread and water bottles to the residents of Arunthathiar colony in the Mettupalayam area of Perambur. He surveyed the flood situation in the Adyar at Kotturpuram, besides visiting the vulnerable areas including Ganapathipuram, close to the Velachery lake.

He reviewed the situation at a meeting held at the Secretariat. Secretary of Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department K. Deenabandu, Secretary (Revenue) S. Audiseshiah, Commissioner of Revenue Administration R. Santhanam, Commissioner of Police Letika Saran and Commissioner of Chennai Corporation M.P. Vijayakumar were among those who attended the meeting.
