On fatwas

Fatwas may not be in conflict with the judicial system as maintained by the Centre in the Supreme Court (Nov. 3) but they may be abused by a section of religious leaders in making religious laws, interpreting them, and enforcing them. It will be helpful to enact laws curbing the issuance of fatwas in order to preserve the secular character of our democracy.

The Government should desist from delegating any power of law enforcement or justice dispensation to religious authorities lest the personal liberty of the citizens is jeopardised.

The Centre's submission that the right to religion under Article 26 of the Constitution includes the freedom to establish Dar-ul-Qaza/Nizam-e-Qaza to settle disputes between Muslims is dangerous.
