Team from DPS (north) wins quiz contest

384 teams participate in The Hindu Young World Quiz regional finals

BANGALORE: The team "Look at this monkey" from Delhi Public School, Bangalore North, held their nerves till the end and emerged victors in the regional finals of The Hindu Young World Quiz held here on Saturday.

In a nerve-wracking regional final held on stage, the team of Aditya Goel and Achintya Prahlad from DPS (North), kept their cool in the "End game" round to retain their title. They will represent Bangalore at the grand All India Final, which will be held on November 14 at Madurai.

"We are very happy to win the contest again," said Aditya Goel. "I was bit nervous initially and was not sure of winning the quiz. Our strength is India and we scored points in `Mera Bharat Mahan' round," said Achintya Prahlad.

The winners received a cash prize of Rs. 8,000, trophies and gift hampers.

There was a tie for the second place after the final round of quizzing. The team of Shankar M.S. and Amith J.M. from Vijaya Composite PU College, Jayanagar, and the team of Nitin. N. and Sudarshan. M. A from The National PU College, Jayanagar, scored 52 points and the quizmaster posed two questions to break the tie. The team from Vijaya Composite PU College came second and took home a cash prize of Rs. 6,000 and gift hampers.

The team from Sri Kumaran Children's Home (CBSE) came fourth, while the team from National Public School, Indiranagar, and the team from The Oxford Senior Secondary School, J.P. Nagar, took the fifth and sixth place respectively.

A total of 384 teams from 150 schools participated in the event. After the preliminary written round, six teams qualified for the regional finals on stage. The team from SBCJ College, Chitradurga, walked away with the "Best outstation team" prize, while the team "The hammerheads" from Kendriya Vidyalaya, CRPF, Yelahanka, received the "Best team name" prize.

Swimmer Nisha Millet gave away prizes to the winners. She said that she was happy to be part of an exciting quiz final.

Eveready was the title sponsor, while Jamaai Ice-cream was the associate sponsor of the event. Garden City College, Britannia Tiger, Ranga Rao and Sons, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Reliance Hello, Hewlett-Packard, Reynolds, Vizag Steel, Penguin and State Bank of Travancore are the national sponsors. Maaza is the official drink and SS Music was the TV sponsor. Wonderla, Crossword, Pan Office Systems, GRS Fantasy Park, Prism Books, Bril, Siemens Home Appliances, Ganjam Nagappa and Sons and British Library were the regional sponsors. The event was managed by Quizwalahs. Quizmaster V.V. Ramanan hosted the show.
