Chennai : About 60,000 persons enrolled in the District Employment Office are eligible for unemployment assistance programme, Chennai Collector R. Jaya said here. The Chennai Employment Office already sanctioned assistance to 4,832 persons and the numbers will increase before the inauguration of the scheme slated for November 11, the Collector told reporters on Thursday. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will launch the scheme in Tiruchi. In Chennai, Union IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran, Union Highways Minister T. R. Baalu and State Information Minister Parithi Elamvazhuthi will inaugurate the programme. Under the scheme, financial aid will be offered to persons who have been enrolled in the employment exchange for a minimum of five years. This means that the candidate should have enrolled before September 30, 2001. Unemployed candidates with SSLC qualification will be given Rs. 150, Plus 2 - Rs. 200 and UG/ PG - Rs. 300 every month. The money will be credited into the savings bank account of the candidate every three months. The Revenue Inspector will issue a clearance certificate if the candidate met the following criteria: Monthly income of the family is less than Rs. 2,000; the parents or spouse of the candidate have resided in Tamil Nadu for at least 15 years; the candidate is 40 years or below (45 for SC/ST candidates) and the candidate is not a student (distance education exempted). The clearance certificate has to be submitted to the employment officer, who will sanction the assistance. The scheme is for three years. Ms. Jaya said candidates who applied for unemployment allowance should not worry that they would lose the opportunity to get a government job. The application form can be downloaded from the website www.employment.tn.gov.in. Photocopies of the form will also be accepted.
