CHENNAI: The sprawling Avadi municipality covering an area of 64 sqkm would now have an underground sewerage system. Chennai Metrowater is preparing a detailed report for the Rs.125 crore-project.

The details were discussed at a review meeting on comprehensive sewerage and water supply scheme being implemented in different phases in the adjacent urban local bodies in the Chennai Metropolitan area on Saturday.

Sites have been identified for constructing 16 pumping stations. The sites identified for the pumping stations would be fenced.

Avadi would also have an enhanced water supply system with Rs.80 crore being earmarked. About 50,000 house connections would be provided for 2.3 lakh population.

While the sewerage projects at Ambattur and Pallavaram are in progress , reports are being prepared for Maduravoyal, Ullagaram Puzhuthivakkam and Kathivakkam. Tenders have been invited for a Rs. 6-crore water supply scheme at Kathivakkam.

Representatives from Metrowater, the implementing agency, Commissionerate of Municipal Administration and municipalities took part in the meeting.

The ongoing water supply and sewerage projects in several other local bodies, including Poonamallee, Alandur and Valasaravakkam were also discussed.
