Stress on use of natural dyes

HYDERABAD: The first-ever seven-day International Natural Dye Symposium, mainly put together by the UNESCO and Crafts Council of India (CCI) held here got off to a flying start with speakers sending out a clear message advocating the use of eco-friendly, natural dyes.

Inaugurating the symposium on Sunday, Union Minister of State for Textiles E. V. K. S. Elangovan referred to the uniqueness of natural dyes for their colour and originality that had appealed to crafts persons who had mastered the art over the years.

Tourism Minister J. Geetha Reddy expressed happiness that Hyderabad was chosen as the venue for a gathering of about 800 delegates from 70 countries comprising scientists, crafts persons, subject experts and opinion makers. Director of Crafts at UNESCO Indrasen Vencatachellum explained the commitment that UNESCO had in protecting the environment. He said that the symposium's focus was on use of eco-friendly natural dyes and raising awareness.
