Literacy programme in jail concludes

Bidar: Crime rate in society can be reduced by increasing literacy level among people, said Additional District and Sessions Judge B.S. Bhagyarathna in Bidar on Wednesday.

At the valedictory function organised for inmates of the district jail, she said the lack of education contributed to increase in crime rate.

Zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer Jitendra Nayak urged inmates to make the best use of knowledge acquired during the literacy programme. Samaja Seva Samiti president M. Shashikala, Canara Bank senior manager Panchalaiah, jail Superintendent of Police S.M. Patil, medical officer B.S. Ragate and advocate Shakuntala Patil Tambake spoke.

District adult education officer Shankar Shindhe listed out the programmes of the government to spread literacy. Jailor A.B. Kamble and Rajappa Gunalli of the District Literacy Committee were present.

Books distributed

Canara Bank, Samaja Seva Samiti, district jail authorities and the District Literacy Committee jointly organised the programme. Books and writing material were distributed to inmates.
