BANGALORE: `The Hindu Young World Fest 2006' came to a close here on Thursday. Stars from Kannada filmdom shone brightly at Mangala Auditorium, NMKRV College, Jayanagar 3rd Block, venue of the literary and cultural fest. Television artiste Malavika, who inaugurated the fest, said that she was happy to be among the children. Such events provided them an opportunity to showcase their talent, she said. The finals of the group dance (Indian popular/film/western), group dance (Indian folk) and group dance (classical) were held on Thursday. Children participated in flower arrangement, collage, cartooning, ceramic tile painting and garland-making competitions. Oxford Senior Secondary School, J.P. Nagar, walked away with the "Best Performance Young World Fest 2006" trophy. Actors Vijaya Raghavendra and Sudha Rani attended the valedictory function. They, along with M. R. Sivakumar, Vice-president (Circulation), The Hindu, Chennai, gave away prizes to the winners. Mr. Raghavendra lauded the participants for their brilliant performance . He said that such events were not held when he was in school.
Added responsibility
The prize-winners had an added responsibility of performing better, he added.
Ms. Rani said that such events would make children more confident. She told the children to concentrate on studies and at the same time excel in co-curricular activities. She advised them not to use drugs or alcohol. Mr. Sivakumar said that children assimilated good things from various media. "The knowledge thus acquired should be put to good use," he said. N. Rajashekar, Regional General Manager of The Hindu, Bangalore welcomed the gathering. Over 2,000 children from 120 schools participated in this year's event. "The event attracts the best of talents. It provides an opportunity for students to showcase their talent with interesting competitions lined up for different age groups," he said. G. R. Venkatesh, Assistant Regional General Manager of The Hindu, Bangalore, proposed a vote of thanks.
Hand in hand
The performance of the children made Mr. Raghavendra come on stage and dance with the students of BVB Nagarjuna Vidyaniketan school. He said he had been yearning to do it and when the opportunity was given to him, he just grabbed it. He later sung his popular Kannada song, "Jaaji mallige node." "Mukta" Malavika enjoyed the company of children. She said that like children, she also had become an annual feature of the event. Students of Venkat International Public School and Maruthi Vidya Kendra, Tumkur performed at the valedictory function. Pradeep "Michael Jackson" Paul, a student of KRLS Patel Reddy School, performed a break dance.
A classical dance presentation by students of Chithkala School of Dance and a ballet by the students of Shona Dee Academy Dance left the audience spellbound.
Those who had contested in the event earlier knew what was required to win prizes. They put in their best in whatever event they participated. The encouragement of teachers and parents were noticeable.
