`Railways takes steps to check corruption'

BANGALORE: To curtail corruption, the railways has taken steps such as release of vigilance bulletins, information to public on claims and grievances, floating of tenders on website, internet booking, e-ticketing and computerised passenger reservation, South Western Railway Divisional Manager Mahesh Mangal said here on Thursday.

At a seminar on "Vigilance Awareness" organised by Bangalore Division of South Western Railways Mr. Mangal said Railways had to cater to a demand much more than the capacity. In the process, there were chances for "some" corruption to take place.

The former Lokayukta M.N. Venkatachala lauded the contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and his successor G.B. Pant, who as Home Ministers, laid down principles for public servants to be honest and work with sincerity and integrity.

Mr. Venkatachala insisted on the seven principles of selflessness, integrity, honesty, principles of doing things according to one's merit, openness, taking responsibility for every action, and leadership.
