CHENNAI : The police recovered stolen property worth Rs. 11.79 lakh , including 63-sovereign gold, nine two-wheelers, a lorry, copper wire weighing 60 kg, Rs. 45,000 in cash. Twenty persons have been arrested in connection with 21 cases registered in the last fortnight. Speaking to reporters, Commissioner of Police Letika Saran said here on Friday that the crackdown on anti-socials would continue and based on intelligence inputs, they would be "tackled with an iron hand in the city." On Thursday night, 78 anti-social elements were arrested from various police station limits, she said, adding that the raids would continue. So far, the police have put close to 200 history-sheeters behind bars and according to information gathered, there were about 2,000 anti-socials in the city. Ms. Saran said that so far 273 persons had been detained under the Goondas Act this year and 2,800 cases of drunken driving registered. ``We are recommending suspension of driving licence of the erring motorists to the authorities concerned'', she warned.
Hotel raids
Ms. Saran said that night round officers were instructed to check whether the hotels closed the permit rooms by 11 p.m. as per licence conditions. It has been found that 90 per cent of the licence holders adhered to the rules.
