Nagpur : Police carried out a baton charge and lobbed teargas shells at many places in the city on Friday as the protest against the killing of four members of a Dalit family in Bhandara district turned violent.

"We resorted to a mild cane charge, fired a few teargas shells and arrested more than 50 people," Additional Commissioner of Police Bhushan Upadhyaya said here. He said no major untoward incident was reported.

Dalits came out on the streets in protest in South Nagpur localities such as Bhagwan Nagar, Rameshwari, Imamawada, Rambagh and Untkhana.

Educational institutions remained closed and city buses were off the road. Commissioner of Police S.P.S. Yadav and Additional Commissioner (Crime) Bhushankumar Upadhyaya told reporters that 99 people, including 28 women, had been detained in connection with the violence. — PTI
